Hand picked, 100% whole bunches, fermented spontaneously before maturation in French oak (31% new) for 20 months. While I can sense the dill pickle of the stems, there is such depth of fruit and long-limbed grape tannins that I have no doubt the verdancy will be absorbed in time. Cornas-like. Wild and woolly. - ABOUT THE WINE: The Lenger Road vineyard sits at an elevation of 480m in the Mount Torrens region of the Adelaide Hills. The soils are sandy loam and clay over quartz and ironstone on a slight northerly aspect. Late ripening and low yielding the vineyard typically produces sweet, spicy and herbal fruit. Hand picked on the 9th April, 100% whole bunch wild fermented, pressed to French oak and matured for 20 months in barrel (31% new).
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Michael Hall is an English former jewellery valuer, who fell in love with wines while building his first career in Europe in the 80's and 90's. His second career began with a change of scenery, making the move from Europe to South Australia to study wine science at Charles Sturt University, where he graduated as dux in 2005. He has worked stints in Australia with Cullen, Giaconda, Henschke, Shaw + Smith and Coldstream Hills and in France with Domaine Leflaive, Meo-Camuzet and Vieux Telegraphe. Today his micro-negoce sources fruit from the Barossa and Eden Valleys and the Adelaide Hills, producing a stunning range of single vineyard and regional wines. The expertise and dedication of the growers he works with is vital in producing outstanding fruit with an individual character, free from routine sprays and interventions. His philosophy in the winery is about crafting the wine with as few material inputs as possible - hand picking, maceration, wild yeasts, lees contact, barrel maturation and no filtration. Allowing the season and site to show themselves. Slow wine.
