- TASTING NOTE: The nose is brooding and deep with rich, ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine is powerful with masses of tannin, a firm underlying acidity and deep concentration of dark cherry, blue raspberry, roses and earth. This is a full-bodied, hugely structured and dense wine that will age for an extremely long time. An exceptional and classic expression of Sarmassa.
- ABOUT THE WINE: The Sarmassa cru is one of the great vineyards of Barolo and in the best years Brezza produce a Riserva wine made from a small parcel of fruit from within that cru known as Vigna Bricco. Riserva Barolo spends an extra year in oak and bottle (three and two) before being released compared to normal Barolo (two and one).
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: When you think of the Barolo region and its respective communes, arguably the spiritual and geographical centre is the commune of Barolo – nestled on the outskirts of this village in the high section of the famed Cannubi Cru, this is where you’ll find the cantina of Giacomo Brezza, proudly managed by 4th generation family member, Enzo Brezza. The family have been based here since 1885 which puts them into the classic or traditional camp, and although many producers may have strayed from one side to the other, Enzo has kept things as they have been since the start. Long ferments and maceration with the upper tiered wines spending lengthy spells in large Slavonian Botti. All wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast and are not filtered or fined before bottling. Over the years, a project close to Enzo’s heart has been maintenance and protection of his vineyards, which lie mostly in the Barolo Commune including Crus such as Sarmassa, Cannubi and Castellero. Organic farming has always been their viticultural ethos, but since 2014 all wines are now certified and, in many cases, sealed with ‘Vinolok’ glass cork, which in Enzo’s words ‘respects the tradition but embraces progression. Based in lighter, Tortonian soils, predominantly made up of silt sand and clay with traces of limestone, the wines show wonderful fragrance and perfumed notes with softer, more approachable tannins compared to the communes found down in the south.

A: Yes if they have your receipt. However all alcohol orders must be picked up by an individual 18 year or older. Proof of age and sobriety are required as per RSA regulation.
