- ABOUT THE WINE: The 2020 vintage marks the fifth year that Eyrie Chardonnay includes both the Draper Selection from The Eyrie Vineyard but also heritage clones planted at Sisters Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. The Wente Clone and the Sterling Clone total 32% of the blend and come from 7 year old vines in the Sisters Vineyard. The Draper selection represents the balance of the blend and comes from 57 year old vines in the original Eyrie Vineyard. The vintage itself was cool and moderate and produce fruit with stunning concentration and density, but in tiny amounts. Both estate vineyard sites are 100% certified organic and picked by hand. The grapes were pressed in a combination of antique basket press and Champagne cycle press. Juice was run to mostly neutral French oak barrels (9.5% new), fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged on the less for 11 months without stirring, and bottled with a light filtration.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Eyrie founder David Lett was convinced that the climate of the Willamette Valley was potentially perfect for growing Pinot Noir. At the tender age of 24, with a degree in viticulture, another in philosophy, and eight months of intensive research in European wine regions behind him, David Lett headed for Oregon. He left California with little more than 3000 grape cuttings and a firm conviction that Oregon’s Willamette Valley would be the best home for Pinot noir and Chardonnay outside of Burgundy. On February 22 1965, David established the modern era of winegrowing in the Willamette Valley when he planted his first vines. David was soon joined by his new wife Diana, and together they planted and expanded their estate on a former orchard in the Dundee Hills. Their plantings focused on the first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley, but also the first Pinot Gris commercially planted outside of Europe, and other cool climate varieties. In hindsight the Letts' choices were remarkable. Today the Dundee Hills are the Willamette Valley’s most densely-planted, highest-value grape ground, and Pinot noir is Oregon’s leading variety. The Eyrie Vineyards have been managed with organic principals since the outset and winemaking follows the same gentle approach; natural fermentations, minimal racking, extended lees contact, complete and spontaneous malolactic fermentation, no fining, and minimal filtration. David's son Jason took over winemaking duties in 2005.
