  • TASTING NOTE: "If there were to be a grand cru in Meursault (and the proposition has been tabled) it would be Perrieres. There are many styles of Meursault but it's always Perrieres that gets us. And the traditional methods of the Potinet-Ampeau production are exactly what this great vineyard needs to shine. Exceptional complexity, vibrant fruit, with exotic notes and good firm minerality. It's what we call a grown-up's wine!" Elden Selections
  • ABOUT THE WINE: Vincent Durrieu likes to get a little more out of his Chardonnay grapes, so uses mechanical harvesting and a hydraulic press rather than the more modern membrane press. This rougher, longer pressing extracts beneficial components from the skin, perfect for wines designed to be aged. After pressing, the juice is settled and sent to barrel to ferment with its own yeasts. Ageing is for up to 22 months with a maximum of 30% new French oak.
  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER: "Henri Potinet, based in Monthelie and largely with red wine vineyards, married Robert Ampeau’s sister from Meursault, hence the domaine’s white wines. Their daughter married outside the world of wine, but in due course her son Vincent Durrieu, grandson therefore of the original Potinet-Ampeau marriage, came back to take over. In fact, he had been working there increasingly from his middle teens. The Ampeau genes run strongly in him – both a certain physical resemblance and the way of making and marketing his wines. The vineyards are beautifully looked after and then, unusually for leading domaines in this part of the world, are picked by machine. The whites are given a long and fierce pressing in a vaslin hydraulic press, after which the juice is settled and sent to barrel to ferment with its own yeasts. This fierce pressing is also unusual, but I suspect is a good idea as it will extract beneficial components from the skin – though the style will not suit the ultra pure, non-phenolic advocates.

Vincent Durrieu can call on four separate underground cellars, two each for red and white, allowing for the wines to spend their second winter in wood, undisturbed and indeed unracked, until they are assembled for bottling. The whites are typically bottled in July, nearly two years after the harvest. They are exceptionally intense wines in their youth, so need considerable time in bottle to mature – time which the Potinet-Ampeau protocol allows them. All the whites have been bottled using DIAM30 closures since 2015. The reds, having been picked by machine, are de facto destemmed. There is a light cool pre-maceration, a little bit of punching down at the start to kick things off, then a long fermentation, from four to six weeks in the vat, with minimal further intervention – just enough to keep the solid chapeau damp. These too are fascinating wines of character, not just ageworthy, but actually needing the time in bottle for the fruit to emerge from the initial more tannic structure." Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
