- ABOUT THE WINE: Notwithstanding the Clos des Epeneaux, Leroux has always said that if there was one 1er Cru that would tempt him back to Pommard it would be Les Rugiens. A new long-term contract with the same owner as the Volnay Caillerets brought Leroux back to his old stomping ground in 2017 and so, once again he is working with the same iron-rich red clay soils that he did, so famously, at Comte Armand. These vines (0.6-hectares covering three small parcels of 25- 90-year-old vines) lie at the foot of Les Rugiens-Hauts, the part of the vineyard that is considered by many (Leroux included) to produce Pommard’s greatest wines. Again, only the youngest fruit was de-stemmed, leaving half the fruit as whole berries. It’s “the kind of Pommard I love,” says Leroux.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Benjamin Leroux is one of the most exiting modern producers in Burgundy. He created a name for himself at Domaine du Comte Armand (where he was appointed the general manager at just 24 years of age) before setting up his own negociant business in 2007. Today he owns or manages about 30% of the vineyards that go into his wines with his range of wines coming from across the Cote d'Or, from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin. His own holdings are all certified organic (with many biodynamic principals also applied) with sourced vineyards sharing his own farming philosophy's. His winemaking is well known for his discreet handling of oak and purity of fruit expression.
